Release of the updated Ontario Gonorrhea Testing and Treatment Guide

Gonorrhea is the second most frequently reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Ontario, and from 2013 to 2017, the reported rate of gonorrhea increased 64.5%. This fall, Public Health Ontario is releasing the updated Ontario Gonorrhea Testing and Treatment Guide, 2nd Edition. The guide contains updated recommendations for laboratory testing, treatment, and follow-up of cases and contacts with uncomplicated anogenital and pharyngeal gonorrhea in Ontario. This session will describe the current epidemiology of gonorrhea in Ontario, and the updated Ontario testing and treatment recommendations.

Presenters: Vanessa Allen and Fiona Guerra

Vanessa Allen is Chief of Medical Microbiology at Public Health Ontario with an interest in the science, clinical and public health aspects of sexually transmitted infections, enteric and foodborne microbiologyand Clostridium difficile. She is also an infectious diseases consultant at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She completed her Doctor of Medicine (MD) at McGill University, her residency in internal medicine, infectious diseases and microbiology at the University of Toronto and her Masters of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Her research interests include the molecular epidemiology and mechanisms of resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the use of genomics to understand the origin and control of food borne infections and novel strategies to combat antimicrobial resistant organisms.

Fiona joined the Communicable Diseases Team as Senior Program Specialist, sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) in November 2017. Previously, Fiona was a Public Health Agency of Canada Surveillance Data Officer focused on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), located at the PHO Laboratory. She was a post-doctoral and then an Epidemiologist in Applied Immunization Research at PHO, where she led projects related to measles elimination and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program impact. Fiona’s interests include sexual and reproductive health, immunization, health equity, community-responsive research and related fields of inquiry.
